Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The speculation about The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team might be crafting a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, sometimes in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
